The Prime Minister has warned of the inevitable consequences of the easing of lockdown which will see a rise in infection rates but said that he sees no reason to change the timetable for the ending of restrictions.

Speaking from Downing Street this morning, Johnson said that As we unlock, the result will inevitably be that we will see more infection, sadly we will see more hospitalisation and deaths, and people have just got to understand that.

At the moment I can’t see any reason for us to change the road map, to deviate from the targets that we’ve set ourselves,

He added that:

“Of course the vaccination programme has helped, but the bulk of the work in reducing the disease has been done by the lockdown,”

“it’s very important to understand the reduction in deaths…has not been achieved by the vaccination programme. It’s the lockdown that has been overwhelmingly important” he commented
