An IOPC investigation into the accounts given by Chief Inspector Dale Sexton, force duty officer on night of the Manchester bomb, has referred the matter to the director of public prosecutions as there “is an indication that a criminal offence may have been committed”

Sexton provided evidence to GMP’s internal inquiry team and Mayor of GM Andy Burnham’s independent Kerslake inquiry that he effectively “forgot” to contact the ambulance services due to being swamped on the night

Sexton said during the inquiry that he purposefully didn’t contact the ambulance services, or the fire service, because he would have had to inform them of Operation Plato

Plato, he said, would mean creating a “hot zone” around the arena, pulling out first responders working on the victims. And so he purposefully kept the ambulance and fire services in the dark.

Ch Insp Dale Sexton was the force duty officer for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and was working in the control room on the night of the 2017 attack.
