Hummingbird Hubs, a community group set up to help people in need wherever they are, is driving two gift appeals to spread kindness to 200 children and elderly people in Glossop and Tameside who might not otherwise receive a gift on Christmas Day.

The grassroots community group, which is led by Jo Gregory and a team of helpers, crafters and local organisations, is aiming to provide a gift and a handwritten card for every elderly person in the local area who is alone and without family this Christmas.

The ‘Gift a Gift for the Elderly’ drive will be assisted by local schools who are getting involved by asking pupils write their own handwritten messages. The appeal already has several schools signed up to link with the help of Facebook groups such as H.A.P.P.E, including Holy Trinity CofE in Ashton, Glossopdale Secondary, Simmondley, Dinting and Padfield Primary schools, Little Stars Nursery Hadfield, Merseybank nursing home and St Charles school, Padfield.

Local agencies on board include The Bureau, Ageing Well Glossop & Hadfield and various local care homes who will match the gifts and recipients. The Hummingbirds are also encouraging the public to nominate an elderly person in the community who’s in need of a gift this festive season.

The Hummingbirds’ Christmas toy appeal has already received a staggering response and is aiming to deliver toys, games and books to around 500 vulnerable children who wouldn’t otherwise receive a gift on Christmas Day. All gifts will be donated to families via Cascade Baby Bundles, We Shall Overcome, Crossroads Refuge and local Social Services.

Hummingbird Hubs’ Jo Gregory comments: “We’ve been blown away by the response to our appeal so far and the kindness shown by our community. It just shows how much can be achieved when everyone helps a little bit and comes together through small acts of kindness.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has donated so far, the agencies that we are working with to distribute the items and all our amazing local crafters who are working flat out to create handmade items to include within the gift packs. Our ethos at the Hummingbirds is that we can’t help everyone but everyone can help someone and this Christmas more than ever, we are determined to make a difference.

“If you are able to donate a gift this Christmas or would like to nominate someone to receive a gift, please contact me directly for further details.”
