Greater Manchester Police’s Chief Constable has vowed to extend the successful Operation Vulcan that has cleaned up the Strangeways area into the Transport System and the City Centre

Speaking on BBC Radio Manchester this morning Chief Constable Stephen Watson revealed that Operation Vulcan will be extending from Cheetham Hill into the City Centre and the Tram Network.

Much of the City Centre focus will be around the Piccadilly Gardens area said Watson adding that

“So, we’re very much dealing with the transport infrastructure almost as an 11th district of GMP. We’re working very closely with Transport for Greater Manchester.”

“We are all really determined that we would put an increased focus on to the whole of the transport infrastructure to make it safe, make it feel safer for people.” said the Chief Constable adding that

“We want to encourage usage of the public transport system for the benefit of all.”

Piccadilly Gardens will be targeted said Watson

“I think Piccadilly Gardens is not the gateway to Manchester that any of us want,” adding

“I think it looks poor, it does attract too many of the wrong sorts of people, it creates a sense of lawlessness, a lack of safety, there’s too often the smell of cannabis around the place and it does need tidying up.”

Operation Vulcan Vulcan led to 215 counterfeit stores being shut down, with the operation ‘literally ripping out tens of millions of pounds from organised crime’ he told the programme
