The CEO of Greater Manchester Mental Health has resigned

Neil Thwaite‘D resignation follows a review over the Edenfield  Centre in Prestwich which found multiple governance failures and suggested that some of the concerns ‘had been escalated and were known at higher levels in trust

Last year BBC Panorama investigated allegations surrounding The Edenfield Centre, based at Prestwich Hospital using undercover filming and revealed how patients were put at risk due to a “toxic culture”

It has previously been reported that the patients have allegedly been mistreated by staff members at the site, which provides secure treatment for adults with enduring mental health needs.

In a statement Neil commented,

“Following the awful failings highlighted at Edenfield and other challenges, the last 6 months have been incredibly difficult for everyone and through engaging with staff, service users, carers and stakeholders, we have worked on our plan to get the organisation on the right path for recovery.

“Now we have launched our Improvement Plan, which will be implemented over the next 2 years, I feel this is the right time to hand over the reins to a new CEO. The plan strengthens our approach to ensure the safety of our service users and staff, ensuring high quality care.”

Bill McCarthy, Trust Chair, said: “Neil is a compassionate, visible leader in our organisation and across our system and I have enjoyed working with him during the last four months. I know many of you have met or worked with him over the years and I am sure you will all join me in wishing Neil well for his future”.

Thwaites will continue in post whilst the Trust commences recruitment arrangements.
