The Veteran MP Graham Stringer has on e again called for Kier Starmer to stand down

The Greater Manchester MP said the premier was ‘despised on the doorstep’ and should set out a timetable for his going

“They have effectively severed the connection with people who have sustained the Labour Party since its beginning. I don’t think the Prime Minister gets it, I don’t think the cabinet gets it.”

Meanwhile Cabinet ministers are rallying around the Prime Minister

Steve Reed, the Housing Secretary, said on X: “The British public don’t want to hear about timelines, backroom deals and navel-gazing. Let’s get on with the job.”

Peter Kyle, the Business Secretary, said that

“Reversing these results requires a collective effort, not just blaming the boss. We can’t do that by turning in on ourselves. We do it by rebuilding faith in Labour’s ability to inspire and lead our country. Losing our Prime Minister is the very opposite of that.”

Liz Kendall, the Technology Secretary, said that the Prime Minister is “not going to go, and he is not going to set a timetable”.
