Lancashire Cricket can confirm that Graham Onions will leave the Club to join Durham’s coaching staff on 1 January 2024.
Onions was appointed Bowling Coach at Emirates Old Trafford in January 2021 following his retirement after three seasons playing for the Red Rose since the 2018 season.
In addition to his Bowling Coach duties, the 41-year-old led Lancashire to the quarter-finals of the Metro Bank One Day Cup last season as Acting Head Coach.
Onions returns to Durham – where he spent 14 years as a player – as their Lead Bowling Coach.
Director of Cricket Performance, Mark Chilton, said: “Graham has made the decision to pursue a new opportunity back at Durham, and whilst we are disappointed to lose him, we respect his decision which allows him to move back to his home county and be closer to his young family.
“On behalf of everybody at Lancashire Cricket, I would like to thank Graham for his contributions to the Club since joining us in 2018. Firstly, as a player who added a huge amount of experience to our bowling attack and secondly as Bowling Coach for the last three seasons where he has worked brilliantly with our First Team, Second XI and Academy bowlers.”
Graham Onions also commented: “I have loved my time at Lancashire as both a player and most recently as Bowling Coach. I would like to thank Mark Chilton for his support and also Glen Chapple and Paul Allott for giving me the opportunity to come here to play and then also to become part of the coaching staff after I retired due to a back injury in 2020.
“The time is now right for me to move back to the North East to be around my family more often, but I will always be grateful for the six years that I have spent at Emirates Old Trafford. I would like to wish the players, staff and our Members and supporters all the very best for the future.”
