The Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is considering cracking down on social media access for under-16s according to reports this morning.

Ministers are said to be drawing up plans to launch a consultation as soon as January which could include banning them from using it over fears that it is detrimental to their mental health

The current Online Safety Act requires social media platforms to shield children from harmful content or face fines of up to 10% of a company’s global revenue

Earlier this week the National Crime Agency warned that Facebook’s plans to encrypt its Messenger service would put children at risk by dramatically reducing the number of paedophiles reported to the police

Yesterday the regulator Ofcom announced on that it is investigating TikTok after suspecting the platform provided inaccurate information about how it protects children.
