Lancashire’s Tom Hartley was one of the heroes of England’s Test victory over India in Hyderabad yesterday

The spinner in his test debut took 7-62 in the second innings as England clawed themselves back to claim an unexpected victory on the 4th day

It was the 2nd best bowling on debut for England by a spinner after Ollie Pope’s 196 had set up the chance of an England victory having conceded a first-innings lead of 190, which helped England set India a target of 231.

Hartley picked each of the first four Indian wickets to fall, sending back Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma and Axar Patel.

Speaking after the game Hartley said

“after watching Ashwin and Jadeja I realised that I don’t need to bowl quickly, I adjusted my length”.

Hartley is the fifth visiting bowler on Test debut to take six or more wickets in a Test in India. The last one to do so was Todd Murphy of Australia last year.
