The Government has announced that it will start compensation payments to infected blood scandal victims before the end of the year.

It said that would accept the majority of the seventy four recommendations made by Robert Francis, the interim chair of the Infected Blood Compensation Authority.

Included in the approved recommendations is a £10,000 payment to those who were infected due to “unethical research” and a £15,000 payment for anyone involved in trials at the Lord Mayor Treloar College

Francis said in a statement released today

“The suffering of those who have been infected, and their families and carers has been – and continues to be – terrible. As the Infected Blood Inquiry’s report confirms, the awful consequences of being treated with infected blood products have been compounded by decades of misinformation, lack of candour, ineffective support, and delay in redress. This scandal has blighted the lives of, not only those who received harmful treatment, but also of their families and those close to them.”

Regulations will be passed before 24 August to allow the first payments to be made by the end of the year.
