The multi-use games area (MUGA) on Bolton Street will be refurbished thanks to a successful bid to Oldham Council’s Local Investment Fund (LIF). The bid was submitted by Councillor Salamat working with the Football Foundation and Ghazali
Trust. Oldham Labour’s LIF initiative will invest £35,000 to get £105,000 match-funding from the Football Foundation’s Playzone programme. The plan is to fully refurbish the Bolton Street MUGA with a new all-weather surface, markings and equipment. The space will be suitable for many different sports and will also be used for cycling training.

Further consultation will take place with the community to make sure the final proposals are what local people want and need, and a full business case will be submitted in autumn 2023.

Councillor Salamat said ‘We’ve tried to get something done to improve the MUGA for a while. I’m very pleased the opportunity to work with the Football Foundation means it is now possible to improve it and get it used by more people. Children and young people will have new opportunities to play and keep fit.’

The MUGA is next to Clemency House, a community centre being developed by the Ghazali Trust to offer a gym, showers and changing rooms, classrooms and a café. The Trust is also leading a local active travel initiative.

Councillor Salamat added ‘It is always a pleasure to work with Ghazali Trust. The MUGA will be used for cycle training so people can be safe and confident cyclists. There will also be a storage place for the bikes used for the training. All in all the LIF funding will make a real difference in Glodwick’.
