FURTHER investment to support growth and opportunities in Denton town centre is on the horizon if a new funding bid is successful.

Tameside Council this week agreed a plan to bid for Government Levelling Up funding for the town, building on existing projects and programmes of regeneration and supporting active travel.

If successful, the submission would secure up to £20m investment to improve the public realm and walking and cycling facilities, while also helping Denton to reach its full potential and deliver further comprehensive regeneration, attracting additional investment in the local economy and supporting local businesses.

The vision builds on previous investment, which has included the £15m Denton Wellness Centre, 163 new homes on the former Oldham Batteries site and £1.9m secured from GM Brownfield Housing Fund to clear the former Denton Pool site for new housing.

It also ties in with active travel investment from Transport for Greater Manchester to be delivered at A57/Crown Point

Denton is already beginning to see an increase in thriving independent businesses and a growing evening economy.

The town has also recently enjoyed the ‘Hats Off to Denton’ sculpture trail, delivered with Welcome Back Fund monies. It will also benefit from the council’s newly launched DSCVR App, which links residents and businesses to their town centres, using the Welcome Back Fund.

The Welcome Back Fund has also been used to ‘green and clean’ the town centre, making it more attractive to shoppers and visitors.

Tameside Council Executive Member Cllr Oliver Ryan said: “This is a really exciting time for Denton, which is already seeing a lot of investment and development to improve opportunities for residents and support businesses. If successful, the Levelling Up bid would provide a significant financial contribution to helping the town recover from the Covid pandemic, paving the way for further growth and investment and creating jobs, a modern infrastructure and a sustainable environment.”
