Originally planned to be part of a ‘Valley of the Kings’ development, and home to the Manchester based Co-op for over twenty years, Stockport’s iconic Pyramid, seen by thousands of drivers a day as they pass along the M60, is set to be reborn according to reports

The Pyramid has had a confused history-The original valley of the King’s idea which dated back to 1982 when construction began was soon forgotten when the developer of the site went bust before construction finished.

The distinctive structure designed by Maxwell Hutchinson. It has a steel frame covered with mostly blue glass and clear glass panelling at the apex

The building completed five years later remained emty until The Co-op, as one of the major lenders stepped in to repossess the building and in 1995, they moved their customer service team in.

However in 2018,the Bank put the building up for sale in 2018, moving their staff back into Manchester City Centre.Eamar, backed by a Saudi investor, then bought the 86,000 sq ft Stockport Pyramid in 2019.

Now its destiny lies as an up market Curry restaurant with Royal Nawaab owner Mahboob Hussain confirming his plans to transform it into a restaurant and banqueting hall.

The name Royal Nawaab will be familiar to people in Manchester, The Nawaab restaurant and banqueting hall on Stockport Road in Levenshulme opened in on the site of theformer cinema in 2003 only closing last year.

The chain also runs restuarants in London, one based in the Hover Building in Ealing, the other in Ilford, South East London

Discussions are reportedly ongoing so we hold our breathe and wait for the next lease of life for one of the region’s most iconic buildings
