Class of 92 backed, Salford based charity Foundation 92 have launched a Community Champions League for the children of Greater Manchester.
Continuing their work across the Greater Manchester region, from September 2022 the scheme will be delivered as a community outreach programme with teams representing neighbourhoods.
The Community Champions League is a project led and coordinated by the European Football Development Network (EFDN), with the project funded by the UEFA Foundation for children.
The aim of the scheme is to tackle racism, discrimination, and violence in sport as well as small street crime. Promoting social inclusion between youths from different backgrounds is at the core of Foundation 92’s focus and values. The programme will also promote positive engagement from parents and families, voluntary activity in sport and active citizenship, teaching youths’ life skills and good sportsmanship.
Partners of the project are Foundation 92, Ferencvaros, Panathinaikos, Real Betis, Shaktar Social, FC Twente, Benfica, and NAC Breda.
The scheme aims to target young people aged 7 – 15 with more than 30% of participants being from a minority background.
Head of Foundation 92, Tom Hutton commented: “The Community Champions League initiative is just one of the fantastic schemes coming up in the Foundation 92 pipeline. We are excited to get started with it in September with the hope to make a huge difference to young people within the Greater Manchester community.
“The teaching of life skills, tackling racisum, discrimination and good sportsmanship is imperative to the young people of Manchester, and we are delighted to be able to provide the programme.”
