HOME has a long and on-going commitment to screening films from East Asia, in particular those in Chinese languages. The cinema of Taiwan has always been a key part of this offer.

This year HOME has had the opportunity to work with the Taipei Representative Office in the UK and the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan (R.O.C.)to bring a range of Taiwanese films to Manchester. Throughout 2022, HOME invites you to join them for a series of films that reflect one of the world’s most vibrant and exciting production centres.

This Sunday (6th August) marks the start of a very exciting season within this wider, year-round film offer: Flying Fighters of Taiwan.

Following the success of King Hu’s Union Film Company production Dragon Inn (1967), Taiwan cinema produced a series of wuxia films – period pieces with plenty of swordplay. Many displayed acrobatic performance skills in fantastical historical settings, wowing audiences with their sheer energy.

This short season of wuxia films brings together some of the most notable titles of the era, reclaiming them from the fuzzy images of home video and putting them back on the big screen where they belong, including a brand-new restoration of Joseph Kuo’s Swordsman of all Swordsmen (1968) courtesy of the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute.
