Metrolink’s 120th tram has embarked on its European journey to Manchester to complete the fleet. The brand new vehicle departed from the Vienna depot of global manufacturer Bombardier last night, Tuesday 27 September 2016.
Tram 3120 marks the last of the current order of the stylish and much more reliable ‘M5000’ model – almost seven years since Tram 3001 went into service on the Eccles line on 16 December 2009.

The introduction of the M5000 model lead to significant improvements in service reliability when they started to replace the older fleet of T68 trams, the last of which was retired in 2014.

Following its delivery, the tram will be kitted out with its Greater Manchester style livery before making its first run out on the system.

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “This is a proud moment for everyone associated with Metrolink as the imminent arrival of Tram 120 is symbolic of the major investment and expansion of the Metrolink network in recent years.

“Coupled with the recent return of services to a bigger and better St Peter’s Square and with the opening of the Second City Crossing just around the corner, we are ensuring Metrolink will continue to provide the people of Greater Manchester with fast, frequent and reliable services for many, many years to come.”

Christian Diewald, Chief Country Representative of Bombardier Transportation, Austria said: “The on time delivery of the 120th tram truly proves the excellent and close cooperation between Bombardier and Transport for Greater Manchester since our successful partnership began.

“We are pleased that tram 120 will soon be available for the passengers of Greater Manchester. These trams feature a high degree of passenger comfort and score points with their strong performance in terms of energy efficiency and reliability.”
