Work to transform Ashton under Lyne’s new market square has taken a step forward
Steel posts for the brand-new canopy are now being installed by The Casey Group Ltd which marks a major milestone in the market square transformation.
The canopy will offer year-round shelter for market traders and visitors, creating a more welcoming and vibrant space which has been designed with input from traders, residents, and stakeholders.
A number of traders have already signed up for the new kiosks which will also arrive on site in the coming weeks.
The steel posts form the main structure of the canopy and are being carefully put in place in stages. The process of installing them will take around three weeks.
Fan-shaped paving being laid by engineering teams who making Rain garden foundations and steps leading to the canopy space are also now being put in place.
The restoration of Ashton Town Hall is also moving forward, with a bold vision for completion by 2030
The plans will be breathing new life into the beloved Grade II Town Hall, blending its rich heritage with modern functionality and include a revitalised Council Chamber and function room, Community spaces celebrating Ashton’s local heritage and Commercial spaces like a wine bar, coffee shop & restaurant
The plans are backed by £3.4 million in Government funding, this project is part of a wider regeneration strategy for Ashton Town Centre, including the Market Square Transformation and Ashton Regeneration Partnership.
Construction is expected to begin in 2028, with phased development leading to a 2030 completion, subject to funding confirmation.
