Wigan Athletic suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Leeds United at the DW Stadium.

Two goals from United striker Patrick Bamford either side of half-time saw Latics beaten for a second league game in a row.

Joe Williams received a red card for the home side in the first half for two bookable offences with Lee Evans going closest for the hosts, being twice denied by two fine Kiko Casilla saves.

Tranmere Rovers picked up the points at Prenton Park as they ran out 5-0 winners against Bolton.

Goals from Ollie Banks, Morgan Ferrier (2), Connor Jennings and Stefan Payne went unanswered against a young Wanderers side who were without the services of Liam Edwards and Dennis Poltic who both picked up knocks following the midweek game at Rochdale.

Rochdale Manager Brian Barry-Murphy  praised the “courage” and “resilience” of his players following his side’s goalless draw at Shrewsbury Town, a result that extends Dale’s unbeaten start to the season.

Rochdale finished the game on top and had a goal controversially ruled out late on, and the Boss was pleased with the way his players continued to push for a winner right until the end at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Jake Beesley came off the bench to score in stoppage time as Salford City earned a 1-1 draw against Port Vale.

The Valiants had taken the lead late on themselves through substitute Richie Bennett as he scored at the near post in the 80th minute, catching Salford out at the back.

However The Ammies pushed on and in the 93rd minute Tom Walker floated a free kick into the Vale area which Beesley rose highest to head his first Salford goal since January 2018.

After the game, manager Graham Alexander says he felt it was a deserved point for his side, who have now won one, drawn one and lost one of their opening three games in the Football League.

Oldham are rock bottom of the football league without a point after being beated by Bradford City 3-0 .

It was a disappointing result and we made a big tactical fault. When you give two goals it’s difficult to win.” said Head Coach Laurent Banide

He added: “So it’s difficult for everybody but it’s football and we must have a reaction in the next game.”
