A doctor who walked out of Tameside hospital during an operation to have sex with a nurse will be able to continue practicing after a medical tribunal found that he was at a very low risk of repeating the misconduct

Forty four year old Dr Suhail Anjum left a male patient mid-surgery to have sex with a nurse in an adjacent empty theatre room.

The lead anesthetist excused himself for a “comfort break” and returned eight minutes later.

A female colleague, feeling suspicious, looked for him and discovered the affair. She reported the incident, and in court, Dr. Anjum took full responsibility, claiming he was having marital issues at home.

He requested an opportunity to make amends since no harm came to the patient.

Yesterday The tribunal ruled that Dr Anjum “had put his own interests before those of the patient and his colleagues” and the incident involving Nurse C “had the potential to distract Dr Anjum… and he may not have been able to give his full attention to the patient’s care”.

However Chairwoman Rebecca Miller said tribunal “was satisfied that this public finding of serious misconduct was sufficient to maintain public confidence in the profession and proper professional standards, and that there was not a necessity to make a finding of impaired fitness to practise for that purpose”.
