The election is over but the debate about tax continues, at least this week as the people from Discuss bring their latest debate to the Central Library.

Should the rich pay more tax? As both main parties are committed to freezing VAT and National Insurance, and we have had promises of legally binding tax freezes on one hand and a determination to help support the least well off on the other. In these seemingly unending straitened times, what are the rights and wrongs of expecting those with the broadest shoulders to carry the biggest burden?

Already the largest contributors to HMRC, there will be continued debate on the fairness of expecting more from our wealthiest. But public mood appears to be to make the highest earners pay more than they are doing already and to bring in an increase in a top rate of tax or new measures altogether.

But could a clampdown on high earners lead to a flight of capital, as appears to have happened from France?
