The Covid vaccination programme has prevented 44,500 hospitalisations in England and has saved over 14,000 lives according to the Government’s vaccine minister

Nadhim Zahawi was delivering today’s Downing Street press conference and
said that “vaccines are our way out of this pandemic” and we have now reached the milestone of three in five adults getting the protection of a second dose.

Almost half of 25 to 29-year-olds in England have now had their first dose, and six jab appointments were booked every second in the first two days after vaccines were opened up to over-18s.

The pause on lifting restrictions he added, has saved thousands of lives and will continue to do so by allowing us to get more of the second doses into arms of those most vulnerable to Covid before the restrictions are eased further.”

He wanted 66 per cent of the UK’s adult population protected with both vaccine doses by 19 July, the ‘terminus date’ when all restrictions are set to be lifted.

He also said that data suggests vaccine hesitancy has halved among certain groups – including Black British and British Asian groups – in recent months.
