A further 1,239 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Thursday, bringing the UK total to 103,126.

The government also confirmed that, as of 9am on Thursday, there had been a further 28,680 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.

There were 3,088 patients admitted reported on 24 January, an 11% decline on the seven days previous.

7.45 million people have been given the first dose of a vaccine, up from a figure of 7.16 million people.

The news comes as the European Union warned drug companies such as AstraZeneca that it would use all legal means or even block exports unless they agreed to deliver shots as promised.

Britainsaid its deliveries must be honoured.

“I think we need to make sure that the vaccine supply that has been bought and paid for, procured for those in the UK, is delivered,” Minister for the Cabinet Office Michael Gove told LBC Radio.

Asked if the British government would prevent AstraZeneca diverting essential vaccine supplies from Britain to the EU, Gove said the crucial thing was that Britain received its orders as planned and on time.

Boris Johnson has said he is not concerned by Germany ruling that the AstraZeneca vaccine should only be recommended for under 65s, as he argued the evidence shows it “provides a good immune response across all age groups”.

During a controversial visit to Scotland the Prime Minister said that he does not agree with the German ruling, as he backed the advice from the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

“I think the MHRA, our own authorities have made it very clear that they think the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is very good and efficacious, gives a high degree of protection after just one dose and even more after two doses,” he said.
