A major event, set to generate a £5.8 million boost to Manchester’s economy and raise the city’s profile as a leading sports destination, has been officially launched by the global sports science community.
The countdown has now begun to the prestigious European College of Sport Science (ECSS) Annual Congress, which is set to take place in the city in July 2027.
As the latest ECSS Congress closed in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Friday (July 10), representatives from Manchester Metropolitan University showcased the Manchester 2027 event and gave delegates a preview of what they can expect when they visit the city.
The ECSS Annual Congress, a pivotal event in the sport science calendar, will showcase cutting-edge research, innovation, and best practices in the field.
The congress is expected to attract approximately 3,000 of the world’s leading sport scientists, researchers, and practitioners to Manchester with events being held across the city, including at Manchester Met and Manchester Central.
The successful bid to host the event was led by the University’s Institute of Sport, a leading world-class institute dedicated to championing everything that sport can do – from strengthening communities and building a healthier society, to inspiring the next generation and pushing the limits of human performance.
Professor Tim Cable, Congress President for ECSS Manchester 2027 and Director of Manchester Met’s Institute of Sport, said: “Research, science and expertise across the globe is central to the continuing evolution of sport and human performance – not only as competition and entertainment, but as a force for societal good.
“As a global city where sport is part of its DNA, Manchester is set to welcome the world’s sporting community. In a place that is redefining the boundaries of sport and science, organisations across the city are looking forward to building on the ECSS’ incredible legacy of collaboration.”
The 31st ECSS Annual Congress, held in Lausanne, featured pioneering research in anti-doping, biomechanics and nutrition that is pushing elite athlete performance and building healthier, active communities across the world.
Speaking about the Congress coming to Manchester, ECSS President Janice L. Thompson said, “The ECSS Annual Congress is where our community comes together each year to learn from one another, share the latest in sport science research and exchange ideas.
