Co-op Funeralcare homes across Bolton are creating ‘memory boxes’ with the help of the local community. The memory box initiative helps to trigger long-term memory recognition for those living with dementia.

The memory boxes, which will be taken to care homes across Bolton by Co-op colleagues, will be filled with memorabilia such as old newspapers, coins and photographs from the past. The boxes are used to encourage people with dementia to engage with the memorabilia, prompting conversations about their lives and to reminisce about the past.

The concept was initially thought of by one of Co-op’s Funeral Directors in Scotland when he became aware that many people within his local community were being affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s, which was leading to feelings of loneliness.

Ava Sheldon, Funeral Arranger at Hardman McManus Co-op Funeralcare in Breightmet, Bolton said: “The memory boxes will give us the opportunity to support those living with dementia in our community. Not only do they help raise awareness of dementia, they’ll also help to encourage conversation and memory sharing.”

“We’re appealing for donations from people across the district for the memory boxes. Whether it’s an old shilling, book, recipe or even a football programme from the 1900’s, all donations are greatly appreciated.’’

Ava said: “Our previous memory boxes were incredibly well received by the care homes, and the staff said they really lifted the spirits of the residents. After a particularly difficult past year, we hope that the creation of more memory boxes will help to trigger some special memories for people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s in Bolton.”

To donate memorabilia for the memory box, you can drop off the items at the following Co-op funeral homes: Hardman McManus, Bolton, Crompton Way, Shaw & Son, Relph’s, Farnworth and Cheethams.
