A campaign to erect a statue to football fan who bequeathed his entire estate to his beloved Rochdale following his passing has begun.

One supporter has been so touched by David Clough’s gesture and support of the Club, that he has set up a JustGiving Page to raise funds for a lasting tribute to Rochdale AFC’s super fan.

Mark Cryer is fundraising to commission a statue of David at the Crown Oil Arena and to retire his seat

The idea was taken from Spanish side Valencia, who did something similar for a supporter of their Club.

The more money that is raised, the better the statue that can be put in place, allowing Cloughie to have a permanent presence at the Crown Oil Arena.

The initial target has been set at £2,500, although it is estimated that it will cost around £10,000 to install the type of statue that Mark hopes for.

“I read the article that the Club put on social media yesterday and it was truly humbling,” he said.

“I didn’t know Cloughie personally but I think all Rochdale fans knew of him and what he did for the football club with the various Goldbond rounds that he did in all weathers.

“To leave his entire estate to the Club for the future generations is absolutely unbelievable, so I thought to myself, what could we as fans do to say thank you to a fan like Cloughie.

“My friend who goes to watch Valencia quite a lot had told me about a statue that they have at their ground for one of their super fans, so I thought it would be ideal if we as fans could get together and do something similar.”

David, who lived in Littleborough and worked at the former Whittles Bakery, was a Goldbond Agent for over 25 years and served an incredible 800 members. During his time as a Goldbond Agent, it is estimated he raised over half a million pounds for the Club!
