Andy Burnham has lambasted the Duchy of Lancaster for its inaction in supporting the cleanup of the 25,000-tonne waste dump in Wigan.
The Greater Manchester mayor told Channel 4 News’ Alex Thomson that the Duchy’s plan to hand contaminated land to the local council is “not an acceptable response”and northern England communities were still treated as “second-class citizens.”
He said: “Why does this end up like this in the North but is cleaned up in the South? We can’t have a country where people are treated in different ways, where people here can somehow be seen as second class citizens.
“They’re not, and we won’t accept that any community is treated in that way. We call on the Government to do exactly the same here as was done down South.”
An investigation by Channel 4 News uncovered that the estate of King Charles is connected to the site described as the “UK’s most dangerous illegal dump”
