Detectives in Oldham are keen to make the public aware of a man purporting to be a plumber after a man in his 70s was targeted

Detectives in Oldham are keen to make the public aware of a man purporting to be a plumber after a man in his 70s was targeted and a stash of jewellery stolen in Chadderton yesterday.

The man attended the victim’s home on Chestnut Street and was granted entry after saying he was there to check the water pressure at the address.

The offender proceeded to steal around £100 in cash, as well as a number of pieces of sentimental jewellery – including watches worth approximately £500 and diamond rings.

Investigators believe the incident may be linked to some other recent reports made in the town and potentially in north Manchester, and are appealing anyone with information to get in touch.

Detective Sergeant Matthew Adshead, of GMP’s Oldham district, said: “What’s happened to this elderly gentleman here is appalling and he is understandably shaken after what was a deliberate and cowardly burglary.

“The victim has lost some significant items of sentimental value and we are not only determined to reunite him with these items, but to also catch the man responsible.

“Anyone who recognises the image of the man we have released in connection to this incident, should let us know as soon as possible.

“We’re also asking the public to be mindful of individuals that are gaining access to their properties without correct identification with the intent to steal belongings – if you are ever unsure call the police on 999 in an emergency.”
