bluedot festival has announced the first full day of this year’s festival as the perfect family day out (Friday 22 July 2022), taking place at Cheshire’s Jodrell Bank Observatory.

Now in its fifth year, bluedot continues to be one of the best family friendly festivals in the UK. Little ones can enjoy an out-of-this world family day out with a whole host of science shows, a kids cinema, hands-on activities, interactive workshops, a dedicated Mother & Baby space plus FREE entry to Jodrell Bank’s Discovery Centre, all designed for the young and the young at heart.

With children’s day tickets starting from just £25.00 and under 5’s completely free, the festival is set to provide one of the best value for money family days out in Cheshire.

This year, to celebrate Family Friday, bluedot will also host an exciting illustration competition, giving children the chance to have their artwork displayed at the festival. Schoolchildren across Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Liverpool will be encouraged to send in their space illustrations and the winners will be shown on the main stage screens throughout Family Friday. One lucky winner will also have their drawing projected onto the iconic Lovell Telescope.

Highlights across Family Friday include the incredible, astronomical, and awe-inspiring Space Shed which returns to bluedot for 2022, amazing its audience with stories, interviews and DJ sets from the country’s coolest garden shed.

The Actual Reality Arcade, a life-sized interactive game zone suitable for children of all ages, will bring classic arcade games of the past to life with families playing together for a dose of classic arcade nostalgia.

Dance and party fun take centre space at bluedot this year, with dance workshops, discos and parades throughout the weekend. Combining both music and science, on Friday, Twisted Time Machine will take audiences on an interactive journey through time and space landing in the best music decades from the 1920s through to modern day and beyond.

Jedi Lightsaber Training will allow children to channel their inner Jedi for the day, taking part in a masterclass to perfect their lightsaber skills.

And when it comes to immersive arts experiences, the Luminarium, a beloved bluedot favourite, returns with an immersive light tunnel maze experience for exploration and play.

Music highlights on Family Friday include Groove Armada, Spiritualized, Kelly Lee Owens and Kojey Radical, plus the VIP Village will be hosted by District whilst comedian Lolly Adefope will head up the culture programme.

Festival director Ben Robinson said, “After a two-year hiatus, our fifth installment of bluedot looks set to be one of our best yet. The Family Friday line-up is packed with activities and experiences for festival-goers of all ages.

While our musical acts are a massive draw and promise spectacular performances, bluedot offers so much more. Jodrell Bank is a jaw-dropping location and the perfect place to be inspired as a family by the wonders of science and culture, with hands-on workshops, electrifying experiences and hilariously engaging shows. We can’t wait to be back in action.

Additional family activity will take place throughout the rest of the festival weekend including a headline slot from astronaut Tim Peake, an appearance from CBeebies favourites Clangers and an interactive and outrageous science show from Brainiac Live.

bluedot 2022 will take place 21-24 July. Named Best Medium Festival at the UK Festival Awards, it has quickly gained a position as one of the most hotly anticipated festivals in the country for families and music-lovers alike.
