Leader of the Council Arooj Shah, and ward members, came together with Royton Historical Society and contractors Seddon Construction for a tour of Royton Town Hall and Library.
The aim of the visit was to explore the space and see the progress being made to restore the buildings to their former glory.
Cllr Shah was joined by Cllr Steven Bashforth and Cllr Marie Bashforth on the tour, along with Geoff Oliver and Francis Stott from the Royton Historical Society.
Oldham Council are working closely with Royton Historical Society on the restoration project to make sure that, wherever possible, the original features of the building are protected and restored.
Cllr Shah said: “During this careful restoration work we’re doing all we can to ensure the original character of the building shines through. I’m delighted we’ve been able to work with Royton Historical Society and draw on their expertise for this really important project.
“When the refurbished library is complete, it will give residents a new modern space to read their favourite books, get information from services and relax – all in the restored historic setting.
“We’re also making it easier for people to get around the building by improving access between the Town Hall and Library space; and adding lifts and Changing Places facilities, which contain adult-sized changing benches, hoists, and space for carers.
“I look forward to welcoming the community back into these much-loved buildings when they reopen in Spring 2024.”
Significant progress on the restoration project has been made so far. Including the removal of the extension at the back of the building that didn’t fit in with the original design.
This will be replaced with a new extension that compliments the historic architecture of the building – it will also include an outdoor area with comfortable seating for those who want to sit outside.
Royton Town Hall was opened as a dedicated municipal building in September 1880, by James Ashworth, the first Chairman of Royton Local Board of Health.
The adjacent Royton Library is a Carnegie library, opened in 1907, and funded by philanthropist and businessman Andrew Carnegie.
Royton Library has temporarily moved to Trinity Methodist Church on Radcliffe Street while the refurbishment is underway.
