Manchester-based Barratt Homes is continuing its work to support local employment, by employing five new apprentices to develop talent and support business growth.

The five new apprentices have joined the developer’s site teams and hope to now establish successful careers in the building trade at developments across the North West.

Apprentices have the option to attend their chosen college one day a week and spend the remaining four days getting hands on experience at a Barratt Homes site.

Alternatively, one of the apprentices, Connor Shaw, will spend a number of months working at a development, followed by a couple of weeks spent in college. Currently living in Wesham, Connor works at The Spinnings development in Kirkham and spends a couple of weeks in college every few months.

By next year the apprentices will be qualified in their chosen trade. Connor said, “I’m really enjoying the course. I started by attending a college in my area that gave me the basic skills to become a bricklayer, it was here that I was told about the Barratt Homes apprenticeship so I decided to make the most of the opportunity.

“I really enjoy bricklaying and I’m looking forward to becoming fully qualified next year and getting involved in residential bricklaying professionally.”

Bricklaying apprenticeships are delivered through a number of block week training events that begin in September and October.

This means that apprentices attend college on a programme exclusive to Barratt Homes, allowing the housebuilder to the monitor their progression and development, whilst helping them with their career growth.

At the end of the first three week block, the apprentices will be Health and Safety trained, have their CSCS card and acquire the sufficient skills to lay bricks and start contributing to production from their first day back on site.

This is then followed by three, two-week blocks to add to their knowledge at roughly 20 week intervals.

Neil Goodwin, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Manchester, said, “The construction industry is continuing to grow and this is an exciting time for anyone with an interest in housebuilding to join a market leading company.

“As one of the country’s top developers we are absolutely committed to developing raw talent and I believe that we have a duty to provide these kinds of apprenticeship opportunities.”

All programmes are well structured and tailored to individual needs. Apprentices will receive encouragement, support and guidance to help them develop, giving the skills and qualifications for a successful career.
