In an exclusive interview with ITV Greater Manchester MP Angela Rayner says that Angela Rayner says she has been cleared of any deliberate wrongdoing by HMRC over the tax affairs of her second home
She has now paid the outstanding £40,000 in stamp duty in full, with no additional financial penalty
She said that HMRC found that she had taken ‘reasonable care’ in the purchase of the flat and did not deliberately avoid paying tax
Rayner who would now potentially be able to stand in any leadership contest told the programme that she has ruled out a pact with Andy Burnham. “No… I’m not doing deals or anything like that.”
“I would not trigger the prime minister” when asked about Streeting challenge & says party needs to “pull together”
Rayner said she was “bruised” by whole experience because of intrusion into her disabled son’s personal life, but also because it had appeared as though she was “in it for myself” rather than on the side of ordinary people.
The MP though indicated she may run in event of a contest as she would “play my part” and that she understood why Labour MPs were so upset following last week’s election crushing. She said Starmer should “reflect on” stepping aside.
