Police are hunting for the mother and grandfather of Oldham’s Alex Batty, six years after the youngster went missing after a family holiday to Spain

Speaking at a press conference this morning GMP Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes has given a press conference this morning on Oldham boy Alex Batty and said the force is “relieved and overjoyed” French authorities believe he has been found safe after six years

Police say they still have a lot of work to do on this case, but said Alex was being well looked after by the French authorities and his Grandma was overwhelmed with emotions.

“we still have some work to do in establishing the full circumstance surrounding his disappearance and where he has been’.”

Alex messaged his grandmother on Facebook this week, saying “I love you, I want to come home.”

The delivery driver who rescued missing Alex Batty in France told Sky News that the British teenager just wants “to live a normal life”.

Alex left the UK on 30 September 2017 for a family holiday in Spain with his mother Melanie Batty (43), who did not have parental guardianship, and his grandfather David Batty (64).

Alex was due to return to England on Sunday 8 October 2017 but never did. An investigation was launched but despite extensive enquiries, and assistance from Spanish authorities, Alex remained missing.

Susan Caruana, grandmother to Alex Batty, said, “I cannot begin to express my relief and happiness that Alex has been found safe and well.

“I spoke with him last night and it was so good to hear his voice and see his face again. I can’t wait to see him when we’re reunited.

“The main thing is that he’s safe, after what would be an overwhelming experience for anyone, not least a child.

“I would ask that our family are given privacy as we welcome Alex back, so we can make this process as comforting as possible.”
