Tameside Cultural Services are launching a new ‘Actuality’ Film Festival, which begins this week.
People living and working in Tameside will have an opportunity to watch up to 10 incredible British films, produced by some of the world’s greatest documentary film makers.
The new film ‘Actuality Film Festival, run by Tameside Council and Film Hub North West Central, is in association with the BFI Audience Network and begins this Tuesday 24th.
Covering topics from Art, to love, to war and more; there is bound to be a film to appeal to everyone. Following each film there will be an opportunity for discussion. The screenings will alternate between the both of the borough’s Art Galleries, Central Gallery in Ashton and Astley Cheetham Gallery in Stalybridge.
Cllr Jackie Lane, Tameside Council’s assistant executive member for culture, said: “This is a really interesting and unique opportunity for the people of Tameside to see some amazing films right in the heart of two of our towns.”

112 Weddings, Tuesday 24th February, 7.00pm, Central Gallery Ashton
Juxtaposing rapturous wedding day flashbacks with remarkably candid present-day interviews, 112 Weddings explores timeless themes of love and marital commitment- with funny, insightful and deeply moving results.
Black Fish, Wednesday 4th March, 7.00pm, Astley Cheetham Gallery. A mesmerising psychological thriller with a killer whale at its centre, Blackfish is the first film since Grizzly Man to show how nature can get revenge on man when pushed to its limits.
Finding Fela, Tuesday 10th March , 7.00pm, Central Gallery Ashton . This film tells the story of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s life, his music, his social and political importance. He created a new musical movement, Afrobeat, using that forum to express his revolutionary political opinions against the dictatorial Nigerian government of the 1970s and 1980s.
The First Movie, Wednesday 18th March, 7.00pm, Astley Cheetham Gallery
Life’s a mash-up of fantasy and reality in kids’ heads. But what if the kids live in a war zone? Does the fighting curtail the light sabres and magic princesses? Belfast born Mark Cousins goes to an Iraqi village to find out.
The Crash Reel, Tuesday 24th March, 7.00pm, Tameside Central Gallery
The Crash Reel; Film-maker Lucy Walker’s documentary about snowboarder Kevin Pearce and his inspiring fight back from a life threatening Traumatic Brain Injury.
Vanishing of the Bees, Wednesday 1st April,7.00pm, Astley Cheetham Gallery. This insightful American documentary focuses upon the phenomenon of Hive Collapse Syndrome and its potentially devastating impact on the human race.
At each event viewers will have the opportunity to vote on a further 4 films they would like to see, which will be scheduled at the end of the series.
