The total cost of Christmas festivities, including presents, hosting and celebrations will reach an average of £741 per adult in the North West according to new research.

The survey by American Express found that in the region, 65 per cent of adults are hoping to keep costs on a par with previous years while 18 per cent of residents in the North West are planning to cut back, spending an average of £179 less this festive season

An average of £431 will be spent on gifts for loved ones, £124 on hosting friends and family and £186 will go towards other festive treats such as attending parties.

In order to keep their expenditure under control, almost two thirds of those surveyed say they spread the cost of Christmas by purchasing gifts throughout the year, or in the months leading up to 25 December.

Across the country, one in three Brits say they will be taking advantage of retailer offers such as ‘buy one get one free’ and just over a quarter admit they have agreed a spending cap on present buying with family and friends. Nearly three quarters also claim to have put some form of budget in place for festivities.

To help further with budgeting, almost a third of all UK adults will ease the cost of Christmas by redeeming loyalty points or rewards, saving themselves an estimated saving of £74 or a tenth of their average outlay this Christmas.
