A man has died in custody after being arrested in Cheadle

The 57 year old was arrested following reports of a disturbance on Argyll Road around 4.00am this morning.

The man was transported to Cheadle Heath Police Station, however shortly after his arrival he became unwell and was taken to hospital.

Sadly the man died at around 6.50am.

A referral was made by the GMP Professional Standards Branch to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who have decided to launch an independent investigation.

Greater Manchester Police Chief Superintendent Wayne Miller said: “Earlier this morning we received a report of a disturbance at a property in Stockport.

“Local officers swiftly responded to the incident and arrested a man.

“On arrival at Cheadle Police Station, the man became unwell and he was taken to hospital but he was sadly pronounced dead. Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this devastating time.

“We have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct who are independently investigating and we will continue to co-operate with them fully.”
