Ask any Mancunian what they love about the city, and you’ll get a range of answers.
Some might say “Oasis.” Others, United or City. Some might suggest their favourite watering holes, the seemingly-unlimited choice of decadent eateries, or the cultural hidden gems.
But one of the greatest treasures of the town is our Mancunian spirit. And it’s true, when we come together as a city, Manchester might just be the best place to live.
A generous population, Mancs are always ready to come together and throw ourselves behind a cause to support our communities. With that in mind, these are just a few charitable causes to get behind.
1. Fareshare
Fareshare is a charity that works to eliminate hunger and food waste in the UK.
The brand works across the UK, but has done extensive work with communities in Manchester, including collaborating with footballer Marcus Rashford.
How to get involved
Fareshare is always on the lookout for volunteers at their warehouses, including drivers to distribute stock.
2. Raffle House
Although not based in Manchester, Raffle House supports a number of charities across the UK, including those fundraising for animals, children, and health and welfare issues.
Their model raises money by raffling stunning UK-based properties for entrants to win while supporting fantastic causes. These properties are fully furnished and tax free for the winner, although you can opt to take home the cash value too.
How to get involved
You can enter their raffles via their website – you can purchase tickets as a one-off, or subscribe to monthly entries.
3. The Proud Trust
The Proud Trust is a charity that works with LGBT youth in and around Manchester, creating safe spaces for young people to discover themselves and get support from peers and role models in their community.
They also provide resources for trusted adults such as parents, guardians and educators to support children who may have questions about LGBTQ+ identities, or who may be exploring their own sexuality or gender.
How to get involved
The Proud Trust is always looking for volunteers to support their work with young people, as well as those who can help get their resources into the hands of teens and youths who need them – ideal for those who work in schools or other environments working with young people.
4. Dog’s Trust
Dog’s Trust is one of the UK’s most beloved national animal charities.
Their Manchester branch is located in Denton, and currently houses over 100 dogs awaiting adoption.
How to get involved
Dog’s Trust encourages its supporters to organise fundraising events to support their work. Their website has a number of ideas for great events to rally your community, including coffee mornings, bake sales, and raffles.
5. Manchester libraries
While not technically a charitable organisation, libraries are a valuable resource in the community, and they’re always looking for volunteers to help them run.
If you’re passionate about books and education and are able to give some of your time, libraries provide a fantastic opportunity to contribute to your community and keep a critical resource available for many.
How to get involved
