A man has been arrested after an armed siege comes to a safe conclusion in Stockport overnight

A 48 year-old-man was reported to be with a gun at an address on Heath Road in Shaw Heath yesterday evening.

Armed officers and specialist negotiators attended the address and a large cordon was put in place.

At 3.30am after a long negotiation process the man surrendered himself to police.

He was arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and making threats to kill.

This incident was not terror related.

DCI Liz Hopkinson from GMP’s Stockport Borough said: “I am happy to say that this volatile situation was brought to a safe conclusion in the early hours of this morning.

“A man has been arrested and is currently being questioned in custody.

“I would like to thank the local community for their support, some had to be evacuated from their homes, whilst others were asked to stay indoors. I know that this must have been frustrating but as we could not be sure of the man’s intentions we had to ensure the safety of the neighbouring community.

“We are continuing to search the property this morning so we still have a cordon in place, but we hope this can be lifted later today.”
