Manchester has become the only airport outside of London with a direct flight to Mumbai, the economic heart of India this morning.

As well as positioning the airport as the UK’s global gateway in the North, the route will also be a huge benefit to a wealth of businesses, tourism organisations and universities across the region say Airport chiefs.

The route will unlock £400m of benefits to the North in the next five years, including supporting 2,000 jobs while 130,000 passengers who currently travel indirectly to Mumbai will save masses of time with direct connectivity.

The flights should unlock an inward tourism boom for the North as the UK is the second most popular long-haul route for Indian visitors.
