Over 40 leaders from across the North have declared that they ‘stand alongside’ Greater Manchester leaders, and call on MPs to vote to ensure workers on the Job Retention Scheme receive 80% of income.

“We ask the Government to stand with us rather than seeking to divide us” say the signatories

The Labour leader of Newcastle Council Nick Forbes said:

“I am proud to stand alongside colleagues in Greater Manchester – the Government has underestimated the determination of Northern Labour council leaders and mayors to fight for a fair income for those on low wages affected by Covid closures.

Matthew Brown the leader of Preston council adds

“These demands are sensible to effectively fight Covid and protect low paid workers and our communities and local economies.“
