Bolton is not under any local lockdown, council leader David Greenhalgh has said.

During this afternoon’s Greater Manchester Covid Press Conference, The Conservative leader of the council said that over the last 24 hours there has been ‘a degree of confusion’ following the change on the Government website but after a series of calls with senior officials within the Government he can say ‘with assuredness’ that there is ‘no added restrictions’ coming to Bolton and there is ‘no local lockdown’.

He also said that people should decide for themselves whether to travel, stressing that it’s only guidance, not law.

“People can travel in or out of Bolton, but people are being asked to do it safely and responsibly.”

The Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has asked the Government for a further clarification of the issue.

Burnham told the press conference that

“There will be a concern out there today that this is a local lockdown by stealth….We do not wish to see any return to local lockdowns. We do not believe that they worked.”

Earlier in the press conference, Sir Richard Leese said that mosr places have seen an increase, but nothing like the same rate as in Bolton where the really big numbers are among the under-15s in Bolton, with a rise in the working age population too.
