A new innovation fund for Manchester and Cheshire businesses is expected to be among the measures announced by the Prime Minister Theresa May while she is in the NW today.

The Cabinet will be meeting in Warrington on a government away day

They will be unveiling a new industrial strategy, and will also be announcing £556m for the Northern Powerhouse to help create jobs, support businesses and encourage growth in the region.

Other announcements are expected to include a terminal linking rail, sea and road at Goole, and a 21st century conference centre in Blackpool.

it is the Prime Minister’s first away day cabinet meeting and is significant in coming to the North West after there had been criticism that she was not as keen as her predecessors on the concept of the Northern Powerhouse.

On the new industrial strategy :

“The modern industrial strategy will back Britain for the long term, creating the conditions where successful businesses can emerge and grow, and backing them to invest in the long-term future of our country,” she said.

“It will be underpinned by a new approach to government, not just stepping back but stepping up to a new, active role that backs business and ensures more people in all corners of the country share in the benefits of its success.”
