Music theatre organisation Made by Mortals have released a series of eight interactive podcasts for primary school age children. Called Armchair Adventures, each podcast takes you on a fantastical journey of the imagination, with music, song and movement.

The podcast series has been applauded by both HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Ashton-under-Lyne MP Angela Rayner in letters written to Made by Mortals.

Since launching, the podcast has had more than 20,000 listens and the not-for-profit organisation has also run live online performances for more than 5,000 school children.

Now all eight episodes are available in your podcast app – the perfect and FREE activity for the school summer holidays. The Armchair Adventures podcast takes young listeners on a magical treetop journey; a superhero adventure; a trip to see the Northern lights; a seaside adventure and a showbiz adventure, a music festival and a football adventure.

The latest episode, and last in the series, has recently been released (June 10) and was created alongside a group of armed forces veterans from across Greater Manchester. They take the listener on an imaginative trip to the Queens Garden Party, where using their own experiences, we find out what it’s like to serve your country.

Andy Smith, award-winning musical composer and Made by Mortals director, said: “School children have missed out on so much since March 2020, including high quality music and theatre. We’re so glad that our podcast has been so popular and we’re currently busy planning out series 2, and wondering where Connie is going to take her customers later on this year!”

The Armchair Adventures podcast was created by the not-for-profit organisation during lockdown in 2020, alongside its theatre group for over-65s, called Hearts & Minds. Before the coronavirus pandemic, they used to take their interactive music theatre performances to schools to provide high quality cultural experiences for KS2.

The podcast features a lead character, 15-year-old Connie (played by professional actress Hannah Donelon), whose parents’ travel agent had to close down during lockdown. She takes her customers (our Hearts & Minds theatre group) on a travel adventure of the imagination, inspired by their experiences.

The sessions were recorded using professional actors, orchestral musicians and experienced podcast engineers, for a high quality listening experience.

Paul Hine, theatre-maker and director at Made by Mortals, explained, “The power of Armchair Adventures is in its collaboration and the unlimited restorative power of people coming together to sing, dance and use their imagination.

As a society, we have all suffered from enforced isolation over the past year, and our music theatre work helps anyone taking part find a collective sense of belonging.”
