An array of curious creatures and mythical green men were recently rediscovered in Manchester Cathedral.
A free talk at the Cathedral on Sunday 5 February at 2pm invites visitors to learn more about the new finds and how they fit with the latest research into this centuries-old church and its fascinating history.
During the recent construction work relating to the new Stoller Organ, photographer Robert Watson took advantage of the towering scaffolding in the Cathedral nave to zoom in on the magnificent ceiling.
The Cathedral has been delighted by the wonderful images capturing the decorative carvings, which allow visitors to see these medieval artworks in close detail possibly for the first time in their 600-year history.
The style of the carvings resembles those at neighbouring Chetham’s Library, established in the early 15th century as a residence for priests at the Collegiate Church (now Manchester Cathedral).
Join Grace Timperley and Michael Powell on Sunday 5 February for ‘Hidden in Plain Sight: Revealing a Medieval Ceiling’ to see the photography and hear more about the carvings and how they help shape our understanding of Manchester Cathedral’s medieval past. Cathedral Guides will be on hand throughout the afternoon to point out the Cathedral’s medieval treasures.
A selection of Robert Watson’s photographs will then be on display at the 15th-century Hanging Bridge in the Cathedral Visitor Centre from 12 February until 7 April.
