The Mayor of Greater Manchester has said that without funding for Metrolink on the scale that bus and train operators have received, the Metrolink system could be in peril.

Metrolink was before the lockdown bringing in six million pounds a week, that is now under one million pounds and there has been a fall off of 95 per cent of passengers said the Mayor who added that he didn’t want to shut down parts of the system, especially because of its usage by key workers.

“We are losing millions of pounds every month trying to run a public transport service in these circumstances.” said the Mayor in a Joint Press Conference with the Liverpool’s Mayor Steve Rotheram

“If there is no deal from the government in the way they’ve bailed out the bus and rail sectors, we are going to face the difficult decision of whether or not we need to mothball the Metrolink.

“It’s not something we have any wish to do because we want to support those crucial workers, those minimum wage heroes, because they still need to get to work for us.In absence of that support, we are forced into a corner.”
