Whitby in North Yorkshire has been crowned the most popular destination for a UK break this autumn by holidaymakers in Manchester, according to new booking data from staycation specialist, Sykes Holiday Cottages.
From misty woodland walks to coastal trails and gothic abbey views, there are plenty of ways for travellers to embrace the new season in Whitby, which is famed for its cobbled streets and bustling harbour, all set against the backdrop of the stunning North Yorkshire coastline.
Keswick and Windermere, both in Cumbria, round out the top three locations for an autumnal stay, with each known for their market town heritage and lakeside attractions.
Sykes’ Staycation Index report has found that on average, holidaymakers travel for 3 hours and 26 minutes to get to their chosen staycation destination, with ease of travel and affordability named as some of the top reasons for choosing a trip close to home.
James Shaw, Managing Director of Sykes Holiday Cottages, said: “The UK has plenty to offer year-round, but as autumn arrives, many will be eager to enjoy the vibrant colours, crisp air, and cosy atmosphere it brings.
“Aside from the seasonal draws of a staycation, we’ve found the time between booking and heading on a getaway has reduced, with 24% of all breaks this year to date booked within a month of departure as travellers look to make the most of last-minute deals.
“It’s also no wonder that Whitby is so popular with travellers from Manchester thanks to its rich attractions, cultural highlights, and stunning scenery. With September upon us, we expect even more holidaymakers to choose it for a seasonal escape this year – whether that be planned or spontaneous.”
