The Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng began his Conservative Party conference speech this afternoon by saying “what a day, it has been tough” after the 45p tax rate U-turn, adding “we need to focus on the task in hand”

“I can be frank, I know the plan put forward only 10 days ago has caused a little turbulence” he added

He told party members that ‘We need to move forward. No more distractions. We have a plan and we need to get on and deliver it.’

And said : “I refuse to accept it is Britain’s destiny to fall back into middle league status”

Kwasi Kwarteng said it was not “radical” or “irresponsible” to seek tax cuts, and that the economic path the UK was on was “clearly unsustainable”

However to muted applause he said that the government is always on the side of those who need help the most.
