Over one hundred and eighty new jobs in tourism were created in Salford in 2013 according to the latest figures.

Figures from the Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor (STEAM) show that tourism generated £544m in the city,  £24 million more than the previous year and that generated the equivalent of 184 full-time new jobs in tourism related sectors, including hotels, restaurants and recreation.

The good news comes as Salford City Council launches its biggest ever Walks and Water programme of canal and river trips and guided walks to show off the rich history and culture of the city.

Councillor Ann-Marie Humphreys, assistant mayor for culture, leisure and sport, said: “It is fantastic to see that people view Salford as the vibrant and culturally rich city that it is.

“The value of tourism for our city continues to grow each year and it is a key part of Salford’s economy, creating more jobs for local people. The city has a fascinating history and brilliant attractions which cater to everybody and these latest figures serve to prove just that.

According to the STEAM figures attractions such as Salford Quays and the city’s rivers, canals and award-winning green spaces drew over seven million visitors to Salford in 2013. Of these, over 800,000 visited the Lowry, making it the top attraction in Greater Manchester.

Each spent, on average, just over £76 during their stay. This has supported the growth of the tourism industry in Salford which now accounts for 6,613 jobs for local people.
