For four years, artist and musician Chris Butler and photographer Will Grundy have travelled regularly between Berlin and the UK under the collaborative name of ‘We Are Willow’.
Tomorrow evening (18th) the Whitworth Gallery Will be holding a special evening of live music, projections and exhibitions to celebrate the launch of, We Are Willow – Berlin, its next insight exhibition in our Collections Centre.
The duo spent 2013 visiting Berlin, staying with various acquaintances new and old, gathering images, sound recordings and film footage. The concept to create two responses to the city, one visually and one musically.
Chris and Will’s encounters in the vibrant German city and the new relationships they formed there have inspired an album, a book of photography and an exhibition drawn from the Whitworth’s collection. Presenting themes of isolation, voyeurism, escape and disorientation, We Are Willow have selected works that both evoke their experiences of Berlin and correspond with the music and photography they created there.
