The supermarket chain Booth’s often referred to as the Waitrose of the North of England has announced that it will be axing its self service tills in all but two of its 28 stores across the region

The store concluded that the personal touch from the manned checkouts gives their customers a better experience – and the “warm northern welcome” is a key part of the store’s charm and found that customers were struggling to use the self service tills

Managing Director Nigel Murray said: “We are a business that prides itself on very high levels of service and very high levels of warmth and personal care with our customers.

And having had some of these checkout self-checkout facilities in place for getting on for the best part of 10 years, we’ve come to the point in the decision where we don’t believe they allow us to do what we want to do.”

He said that the machines were “clunky” and “slow” and that the business was replacing them with “people with personality and warmth and interest in our customers”. Express checkouts will remain for those doing small shops.
