Residents have the choice of three options, with voting stations set up in the town centre

Stockport’s new park needs a name – and residents will be able to have their say when voting stations are launched this week.

The new two-acre park, which sits on top of the Interchange, will open in Spring next year as part of the multi-million-pound development.

The Interchange will be a new hub for bus arrivals and departures in the borough and also includes a 196-home apartment block, delivered in partnership with CityRise.

Work has been progressing quickly on-site at the town’s newest greenspace, with turf being laid and planting taking place, but the park will need a name when it opens for the first time in early Spring.

The park will help to connect our neighbourhoods and communities. It will be a greenspace that residents from all over the borough can enjoy.

It will feature a new walking and cycling link to the railway station, play equipment, festoon lighting and an events pavilion, which will help us to promote our work as GMs Town of Culture.

Following focus sessions with local community groups, a shortlist of three names has been chosen that will now go before the public vote.

The three names shortlisted are:

Arches Park
Viaduct Park
The Overbank
Residents can vote for their favourite by placing a token in their favourite option at a voting station

positioned in various locations around the town centre.

Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “The new park will be a fantastic space in the heart of our town centre, and one which everyone will be able to enjoy.

“We’ve got some fantastic events planned for the year once it is open, which will really boost our status as Town of Culture, and I can’t wait to see everyone enjoying the space and what it has to offer.”

The voting stations will be in place in the covered mall in Merseyway and the Market Hall in the Market Place until Friday, January 5.
